Outside the Classroom

  • An annual hackathon, organized by a committee of students with support from faculty and staff, hosts teams of students to compete to solve problems using data analysis. Each hackathon will explore complex, socially relevant topics in domains such as health care, politics, the environment, or criminal justice. Teams are paired with community members practitioners for mentorship.
  • We offer a variety of workshops to engage the student body and nourish technical skills. Past examples include sessions on R, Python, Data Visualization, and Jupyter Notebooks.
  • An annual campus-wide data visualization contest to celebrate outstanding story-telling with data. Winning entries will be featured on our website, LC DataStories.
  • We foster dialogue on campus by featuring speakers who are experts in their field, both academics and industry leaders. These events give students opportunities to learn about external applications of data and technology, better consider potential career paths, and understand the socio-cultural implications of ever-advancing technologies.
  • We encourage and support students to apply their skills with an internship.
