Overseas

The English Department’s curriculum is generally flexible enough to allow students to participate in an Overseas Studies Program of their choice.

However, majors should keep in mind that they are required to be on campus fall semester of their senior year to complete English 450.  For upcoming programs check with Overseas and Off Campus Programs.

Suggested Overseas and Off-Campus Programs for English Majors:

Ireland: Dublin

Using Dublin as a base, students explore Ireland through the study of its history; literature; theater; and contemporary social, political and economic issues.  In addition to study at the Dublin Business School, students participate in community service projects.  The program also includes group travel to western Ireland and Northern Ireland.  Students will live in apartments.

Italy: Siena

Using Siena as a base, students will explore Italy through the study of its language, history, literature, and art.  Excursions to regional areas of interest, particularly Tuscan hills towns, Florence, and a week in Rome that will include a walking tour of major sites with an art historian.

England: London

This humanities program is based in London, England and has been developed in conjunction with IES Abroad, which will be the transcripting authority for the program.

Students will take their courses and maintain residence at Queen Mary College, located in East London. Queen Mary (QM), established in 1887, is an affiliated college of the University of London.

Students will take 12 to 15 semester credits of courses at QM. At least 8 semester credits must be in the humanities. Remaining credits may be in whatever subject students wish, as long as the course has transfer approval from the registrar.

One course (4 credits) course will be a humanities course taught by the faculty program leader.

The program also includes group travel to Scotland and points of interest in England.  Students will live in campus dormitories.

India: Regional Area Study

India’s prominence on the international stage as one of the largest and most geographically diverse democratic nation-states makes it a rich environment for intellectual inquiry and intercultural education.

The program is primarily situated in the Southwestern state of Kerala with shorter stays at sites in other regions. Integrated into all phases of the program are issues related to gender, the environment, economics, politics, history, religion, language, and the arts.

Students are expected to contribute to the learning of the group by sharing their observations and analysis of issues discussed throughout the program.
