Overseas & Off-Campus Programs Cost 2016-2017

You can access the Overseas Program Fee through the Lewis and Clark Tuition and Fees page.

If you are accepted into a program, you will be given a payment schedule in April (once the Board of Trustees sets tuition for the following academic year). The fee is listed among regular LC tuition and fees so that you can compare the cost to a regular semester on campus.

The Overseas program fee includes tuition, room and board, program-related transportation, supplemental travel insurance, and round-trip airfare to/from the program country (with the exception of the Munich and domestic programs).

Withdrawal of Participant:

In the event the group membership of a student is terminated by the Participant before departure,
the following schedule of fees will apply: a) $300 if termination happens three months or more before group departure (the non-refundable deposit), plus airfare if a nonrefundable ticket has been purchased in the student’s name (the ticket will be turned over to the student); b) $3,000 if termination happens less than three months before departure (includes non-refundable deposit) plus airfare if a nonrefundable
ticket has been purchased in the student’s name (the ticket will be turned over to the student). In the event Participant voluntarily withdraws from the program after departure for the program site, the following fees and charges will apply: a) if the withdrawal is during the first month of the program the participant will be responsible for one-half (50%) of the comprehensive fee; and b) if the withdrawal is after the first month of the program the participant will be responsible for the entire (100%) of the comprehensive fee. The College reserves the right to add any fees incurred by Participant to Participant’s student account, and to refuse registration, provision of transcripts and issuance of degrees until all fees are paid in full.

Overseas program comprehensive fees assume the following:

a.  They are “non-itemized” in that they do not commit The College to allocate specific portions of the fee income to any category or expense but commit it only to provide the services offered and described in special announcements, brochures, etc.  For budgeting purposes, the applicant may assume that the fee will be slightly higher in relation to on-campus costs, subject to a decision of the Board of Trustees. The fee includes coverage of round-trip travel expenses from Portland, OR (overseas programs aside from Munich, Washington DC & New York City), host in-country travel, room and board, tuition, instructional fees and supplemental health insurance provided by iNext during the program dates.

Not included are: round-trip travel expenses for domestic programs and the Munich program, books and supplies, passports and visas, incidental expenses and personal travel arrangements, scheduled either before or after the program, and any departure fees imposed by host country government.

Payment of the program fee begins with a $300 non-refundable deposit payable within 30 days after acceptance, the balance to be paid in full by the date established in the payment schedule included in the student’s acceptance letter.

b.  Guarantee of the comprehensive fee, set in advance of the program, may require the College to absorb unexpected inflation of cost.  Financial stability of the programs also requires the College to absorb savings which may be achieved through good management.

c.  The faculty leader or program supervisor retains ultimate responsibility for all expenditures from group funds.  Budget allocations for all services are mere guidelines and always tentative; when actual costs are less, the savings so achieved may be used at the leader’s discretion to reinforce weaker budgeted program areas or will revert to the College.

d.   The Overseas & Off-Campus Programs Office reserves the right to determine departure cities and arrange transcontinental and trans-oceanic transportation by any medium or class consistent with safety, including the use of “affinity fares” or charters, which often require (except at heavy additional cost) that all participants travel together to and from the foreign country.

e.  Tickets for transportation purchased by Lewis and Clark remain the property of the College until used, may not be refunded for application to travel not provided by the College, and may be withdrawn and reissued if cheaper and equally safe transportation becomes available after the program begins.

f.  Student anticipating any difficulty in meeting payment deadlines should notify the Overseas & Off-Campus Programs Office immediately so as not to be dropped from the program and perhaps penalized financially. If participants would like to set up a monthly payment plan, you may use  Tuition Management Systems (TMS). This plan allows you to pay your fall and spring term costs in 10 interest-free installments, beginning July 15 and ending April 15. There is no monthly payment plan available for summer expenses. The annual enrollment fee is $75. For more information visit http://www.lclark.edu/offices/account_services/settling_your_account/payment_plan/.

Financial Aid:

Lewis & Clark College subsidizes the overseas program by allowing students to use financial aid for on-campus study toward the overseas comprehensive fee.

Financial Aid may be applied to official College programs including aid for the summer semester.
