Friends of Rain, Lewis & Clark College’s faculty new music ensemble, presents a concert of exciting new music on Friday, March 16th 2012 at 7:30 pm in Evans Auditorium on the Lewis & Clark College campus. Composer Marcus Maroney will deliver a pre-concert lecture at 6:45 pm in Evans Room 129.  Admission is free; donations are gratefully accepted.

 

Friends of Rain will perform works of John Cage, George Crumb, György Kurtág, Stephen Andrew Taylor, Michael Johanson, the winner of the first annual Friends of Rain L&C Student Composition Contest, and Marcus Maroney. The program theme “Micro and Macro” explores the various creative responses by composers to ideas that are connected with the small-scale and the large-scale.

The program features three works by Guest Composer Marcus Maroney – his Panneaux en acier, Two Bagatelles for Piano, and Songs from Rock Hill, along with Stephen Andrew Taylor’s Quark Shadows, John Cage’s Sonatas and Interludes, the winning composition of the Friends of Rain Student Composition Competition, György Kurtág’s Twelve Microludes for String Quartet, George Crumb’s Makrokosmos, and Lewis & Clark College composer Michael Johanson’s Evocations for solo Horn.

Audience members will be treated to performances by pianist Carol Biel, pianist Deborah Cleaver, violinist Greg Ewer, cellist Dorien de León, violist Miriam English Ward, guest violinist Paloma Griffin, soprano Anna Haagenson, clarinetist Dunja Jennings, percussionist Brett Paschal, bassist Jason Schooler, pianist Susan DeWitt Smith, guest hornist Leander Star, pianist Stephanie Thompson, and guitarist John Mery.

Guest composer Marcus Maroney is Assistant Professor of Composition at University of Houston and member of Musiqa, a contemporary music group that combines new music with modern art-forms and strives to make modern repertoire accessible to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Mr. Maroney will be in residence on the L&C campus for one week, during which time he will attend rehearsals of his music, work with composition students, and deliver a presentation on his music.

This concert is part of March Music Moderne, the second annual celebration of modern music in Portland.

FRIENDS OF RAIN FIRST ANNUAL YOUNG COMPOSERS FORUM

On Saturday, March 17th  at 3 pm, we invite you to join moderator Marcus Maroney and five talented young composers at the Friends of Rain First Annual Young Composers Forum!  Five winning works of our Young Composer Competition will be selected and performed by Friends of Rain faculty and guests at this exciting new event.
