CHINA: BEIJING (Fall/Spring/Full Year) - Prerequisite: Two years of college Chinese. Grade point average of 3.0 in language. Program: In cooperation with CET, Lewis and Clark offers a semester or a full-year program at the Chinese Language Training Center on the campus of Beijing Normal College of Foreign Languages. Study focuses on language, history, and contemporary culture. Housing is in college dormitories. Fulfills the overseas study requirement for the East Asian Studies major.

CHINA: HARBIN (Fall/Spring/Full Year) - Prerequisite: Two years of college Chinese. Grade point average of 3.0 in language. Program: In cooperation with CET, Lewis and Clark offers a semester or a full-year program at the Chinese Language Training Center on the campus of the Harbin Institute of Technology. JAPAN: OSAKA, KANSAI GAIDAI (Fall/Spring/Full Year)- Prerequisite: Two years of college Japanese. Grade point average of 3.0 in language. Program: In cooperation with Kansai Gaidai University in Osaka, Lewis & Clark College offers advanced students intensive Japanese language study and an East Asian Studies curriculum in the humanities and social sciences focusing on Japanese society and culture. All lecture courses are taught in English. Housing is with host families.

JAPAN: TOKYO, WASEDA (Full Year- With Department Nomination Only- Limited to 2 Participants)- Prerequisite: Completion of Japanese 310 and minimum Grade point average of 3.0 in language. Program: In cooperation with Waseda University in Tokyo, Lewis & Clark offers advanced students a full year progra in intensive Japanese language study and an East Asian Studies curriculum in the humanities and social sciences focusing on Japanese society and culture. Most lecture courses are taught in English, but Japanese lecture classes are available for those with superior language skills. Housing is with host families or in university dormitories.

General Culture Programs
CHINA: BEIJING (Fall 2009) -
Prerequisite Courses: CHIN 102. B or better in language.
Recommended Courses: None.
Program: Housed in Peking University, the premier academic institution in China, the program includes continued study of the Chinese language, and a variety of courses that focus on Art, History, Literature, Economics, Politics and Sociology of China. Students live in dormitories on Peking University campus with access to on-campus cafeterias, restaurants, libraries and athletic facilities. Students end the semester with one of three two-week study tours.

CHINA: CHENGDU, SECHUAN (Fall 2009) -
Prerequisite Courses: CHIN 102. B or better in language.
Recommended Courses: None.
Program: House inSichuan University in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, the program is coordinated through Pacific Lutheran University's Wang Center, which sends a facultuy member to accompany the students. The program includes an orientation tour prior to ariving in Chengdu and field trips to rural Sichuan, including areas of primarily ethnic minority inhabitants.

JAPAN: SAPPORO (Fall) - Prerequisite: One year of college Japanese. Program: Academic study focuses on the language, history, and contemporary culture of Japan. This program is part of a student exchange relationship with Hokusei Gakuen University in Sapporo, the capital city of Japan's northern island of Hokkaido. Students live with host families for the duration of the program. Fulfills the foreign language requirement and two-course international studies requirement. Fulfills the overseas study requirement for East Asian Studies.

Vietnam: Regional Area Study (Spring 2010) - Prerequisites: Minimum 2.0 GPA. Program: Study will focus on a broad interdisciplinary introduction to the history, language, culture and politics of this Southeast Asian country. During the longes component, the program will be located Ho Chi Minh City where students will be immersed in extensive language study and introductory couse work. SEven to ten days will be spent in the central region, the ancient capital and historical center of Vietnam. A final segment of the program, will be offeredi n Haoi, the contemporary seat of the government. Weekend and day trips will supplement and enrich each course. Fulfills the IS 240 and IS 241 8 credit International Studies general education requirement.
