Great Expectations Mentorship Retreat
Purpose of GEM:
GEM is a year-long mentorship program designed to support new BIPOC and first-generation college students’ transition to L&C. GEM kicks off this mentorship program with a 2 night retreat; where new students will develop a new community with other BIPOC/First-Gen students, staff and faculty; gain tips and tricks on navigating L&C; and learn about all the possibilities on our campus.
Goals of the retreat:
- Explore at least 2 new interests and/or possibilities (friendships, resources, opportunities, etc.).
- Learn at least 2 tips and tricks to navigate L&C
- Build a community of support from peers

Friday, Sept 22nd
- 3:30pm - Check-in for GEM @ Progress Flag Road (between East Hall and Roberts Hall)
- 3:45pm - Depart from campus
- 5:30pm - Arrive at Aldergate Camps & Retreat
- 6:00pm - Dinner
- 6:45pm - Welcome & Expectations
- 7:30pm - Community Bonding (icebreakers, games and team bonding)
- 10:00pm - Evening Accouncements
- 10:05pm - Free Time: Homework, Hangout, Having fun!
- 11:30pm - Quiet Time/Lights Out
Saturday, Sept 23rd
- 7:45am - Morning walk/yoga
- 8:00am - Breakfast
- 9:15am - Team Bonding, IME Performances Prep
- 10:00am - Faculty & Staff Panel
- 11:00am - Resource Fair
- 11:45pm - Lunch (Faculty & Staff Panelists and Resource Fair guests to join)
- 1:00pm - Break: Free-time/Nap/Homework
- 2:00pm - Organized Activities (rock wall, basketball, capture the flag, vision board, friendship bracelet making, badminton, field games, crafts, board games, free-time)
- 5:00pm - IME Performances Prep
- 6:00pm - Dinner
- 6:45pm - IME Performances
- 7:15pm - Break
- 7:30pm - Connections - MicroLab or Signs of Identity
- 9:00pm - Debriefs with Mentors
- 10:00pm - Free-time (Smores, Dance, Games, Crafting, Homework)
- 12:00am - Quiet Time
Sunday, Sept 24th
