Miller Internship Award
*The Miller Internship Award is not being offered for Summer 2017*
Award Information
Purpose: The purpose of the Miller Internship Award is to underwrite or supplement expenses of students at Lewis & Clark College who are engaged in scientific research internships in the mathematical and natural sciences.
General Eligibility Requirements: The applicant must be a current Lewis & Clark College student who has been offered or obtained a summer internship in their field of interest (priority given to full-time internships). The internship placement should be confirmed by the application deadline of April 6, 2016 but it must be confirmed by April 28, 2016. Preference will be given to students who are able to include a letter from their internship supervisor outlining internship duties and supervision availability with their application To qualify for this award, students should plan to spend a minimum of 8-10 weeks at their internship site. Students may apply for and be awarded a Miller Internship Award up to two times while enrolled at Lewis & Clark College, although priority will be given to first-time applicants. Priority will also be given to continuing students, though graduating seniors are eligible to apply. Student transcripts and financial aid records will be accessed by reviewers during application review process.
Criteria/Selection: Miller Internship Awards will be awarded to students who have demonstrated strong academic performance and who have secured a meaningful internship experience that meets the specific eligibility criteria of the awards. Qualifying internships focus on scientific research, R&D, and product development in STEM fields (e.g. engineering, mathematics, natural sciences, pre-health fields, computer science, and technology-related disciplines). Applicants will be judged on their ability to persuasively convey the connection between their internship opportunity and their broader career goals, and to articulate a clear understanding of the duties and responsibilities of the internship. A higher priority will be placed on applicants who:
- Are Federal Pell Grant eligible or demonstrate a financial need in order to pursue an internship experience
- Have academic and career goals that are clearly related to the internship
- Demonstrate an ability to think reflectively about their internship experience and how it will relate to career planning
- Propose an internship requiring a substantial level of responsibility in a research-based, industry-related, or product development environment
- Have a strong academic record in coursework
- Are rising juniors and seniors
- Have been offered or obtained an unpaid full-time internship or low stipend that will not cover living expenses lasting 8-10 weeks
- Can provide a letter of intent from their internship site supervisor outlining internship duties and responsibilities and the amount of supervision to be received
The Miller Committee will select recipients without regard to race, color, origin, age, sex, gender, or sexual orientation.
Award: A competitive number of awards of $4,000 + $600 (for living/travel expenses) each will be granted. After review of applications, the award amount may be adjusted based on the evaluation of the selection committee. Under most circumstances, the award will total no more than $4,600 per recipient. Students with paid internships must submit additional budgetary information regarding internship stipend (Budget Template here). Paid internships will be considered only if the internship stipend total is less than $4600. For paid internships, the Miller Award will contribute funds for a grand total of $4600 (Internship stipend + Miller Award = $4600). Due to the highly competitive nature of these awards, students who fail to adequately address the required components of this application will not be considered. Applicants are strongly encouraged to begin work on this application well in advance and to take advantage of the resources offered.
Terms and Conditions: If granted an award, the recipient must sign and return the Terms and Conditions of the Miller Internship Award to the Career Center prior to issuance of the award funds. The agreement clearly states that the recipient must accept and complete the requirements indicated below.
