Winterim is a five-day entrepreneurship immersion event that culminates in a pitch competition. Since Winterim will be virtual this year, the Bates Center views it as an opportunity to open up part of the programming to alumni, parents, students, faculty/staff, and the professional community.
Over 40 professionals served as speakers, mentors and judges for our 21 students during January 11-15. Here are the events we invited our alumni/parents and the greater community to participate in and/or watch. Three of these events were recorded and are available to watch on our YouTube channel.
Tuesday, January 12 at 9:30 a.m. PST - “The Farmer’s Advocate”
Beth Ford, President and CEO of Land O’Lakes, Inc., a nearly century-old farmer-owned cooperative, believes closing the growing rural-urban divide should matter to everyone. This fireside chat will focus on the importance of innovative thinking and immediate action in ensuring our rural communities can connect, thrive and continue to provide a safe and affordable food supply for a growing world population. Fireside chat with Qwynci Bowman ’23.

Wednesday, January 13 at 1:00 p.m. PST - How to Present so People Remember What You Said
One day while riding the MAX train to the Portland airport, someone asked Carl Guess what he did. “I get executives to tell stories so the audience actually understands what they’re talking about.” The entire train car started laughing. We’ve all been in presentations that bored us silly; Carl will give you tools to help ensure that yours isn’t one of them. A highly regarded executive presentation coach (and alumnus!), he will share tricks of the trade that you can use on pitch day and every day - including bonus segment about how to come across with authority in virtual meetings. During student breakout time, Carl Guess ’85 will answer as many guest questions as possible.
Thursday, January 14 at 9:30 a.m. PST - Is Capitalism Failing? - Click Here to watch on YouTube
Rukaiyah Adams and alumnus Jed Emerson ’81 will discuss the role of capital in the current economy, how social equity is impacted, and where hope and market opportunity overlap. Guests may ask questions via chat after student questions.
Friday, January 15 at 1:00 p.m. PST - Student Pitch Competition
Remarks by President Wim Wiewel followed by the annual pitch competition. Each of the seven teams will have four minutes to present followed by two minutes of judges’ questions. Cheer on these students (then hire them)!
