Alumni Leadership Scholarship Recipients '07-'08

henke Emily Henke '09

At the time of the award, Emily was a sophomore, majoring in Hispanic Studies, and minor in Ethnic Studies.

In the fall of 2007, Emily will join the other two ALS winners on the overseas program to Cuba.

At L&C, Emily took a leadership role in the Student Labor Action Movement (SLAM), and organized the Skyline Holiday Gift Fund that provided holiday gifts for the L&C housekeeping staff. In addition, Emily was involved in the York Memorial Project, was an elementary school tutor, a Spanish SAAB tutor, and an admissions intern.  Emily says she values the small community of L&C and the opportunity for overseas travel.

After completing her undergraduate education, Emily hopes to go on to graduate school in an area that supports her interest and commitment to service.

mailespeakman Maile Speakman '10

At the time of the award, Maile was a first-year student.

Despite being fairly new to L&C, Maile had already gotten involved in many student activities, including Amnesty International, Ray Warren Multicultural Symposium, and the Spanish Club. In addition, she served as the Student Academic Affairs Board Ethnic Studies Department representative, a student representative to the Curriculum Committee, and tutored English to a member of the L&C housekeeping crew.

The most significant L&C values for Maile are the high level of global engagement, diversity of belief and ideals, and passionate dedication to service. Maile's interest in civic engagement is guiding her future plans to pursue work in the field of social justice.

Vanessa Vanessa Stine '08

At the time of the award, Vanessa was a junior planning to graduate in December of 2007 with a degree in Sociology/Anthropology and minor in Gender Studies.

While at L&C, Vanessa has distinguished herself by deep commitment and leadership in Amnesty International, the Gender Symposium, and KLC Radio. In addition, Vanessa was involved in the Human Rights Education Project and participate in the "Alternative Spring Break" program through Student Leadership & Service. That spring break Vanessa spent in San Francisco with other L&C students learning about AIDS and volunteering for an AIDS organization

Vanessa cites the meaningful relationships she has forged with professors at L&C as one of the best experiences of college for her. That has added to her future plans to become a teacher.
