Faculty and Student Awards
Faculty Awards
Purpose of the Award
The David Savage Award will be given to a deserving faculty member whose vision and sustained service to the College have advanced the general academic and intellectual welfare of our community of teacher-scholars. The work of this faculty member should reflect the selfless ethic demonstrated over the years by Dr. David Savage, who provided a model of inspirational leadership, tireless support, and genuine respect for his colleagues.
Eligibility
Current tenured faculty members, senior lecturers, and faculty with term in Lewis & Clark’s College of Arts & Sciences who are not previous recipients are eligible to receive the David Savage Award.
Nomination process
Members of the faculty of the College of Arts & Sciences may respond to a yearly call for nominations from the Dean of the College by forwarding the names of eligible members of the faculty for the David Savage Award. A nominating letter should state clearly and concisely how the nominee has advanced the general academic and intellectual welfare of our community of teacher-scholars.
Evaluation of nominations
The Faculty Council will review nominations and recommend an award to the Dean of the College. A result of the review of nominations may be a recommendation against making an award in a given year.
Recognition
The David Savage Award carries a one-time stipend of $1,000 and a plaque.

The Pamplin Society of Fellows created the teacher of the year award in the same year that it was founded in 1994. The original members of the society used this award as a way to honor one faculty member of the College of Arts and Sciences that goes particularly above and beyond the requirements of their position to enrich student learning both inside and outside of the classroom. All members of the faculty are considered eligible for the award, regardless of rank, tenure, title, department, or years of service to the college.

Student Awards
The Rena J. Ratte Memorial Award was established in 1970 by the colleagues, students, and friends of the late Rena J. Ratte, a distinguished philosopher and a highly esteemed professor at the College. This award honors the pursuit of excellence that Professor Ratte encouraged. It is the highest academic award given at Lewis & Clark and is given annually to an undergraduate of senior standing whose abilities and commitment have combined to produce work which is consistently of the greatest distinction.
In nominating students, departments are asked to recommend those students they feel are worthy of the College’s highest academic recognition. A cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 is required.
The students who receive a nomination will be notified and asked to provide letters of recommendation as well as other supporting documents. The Honors Subcommittee will screen the Rena Ratte nominee applications and then interview finalists. The award is presented annually to students at the Honors Convocation preceding Commencement.
