Cara Tomlinson

Associate Professor of Art, Studio Head of Painting

Cara Tomlinson is an artist focused on the processes and materials of painting, exploring oil’s viscosity, strata, support and dimension. Her work is in dialog with the long and varied tradition of modernist abstraction exploring the tensions between simplicity and complexity and the intersection between painting and sculpture.Tomlinson is the recipient of multiple grants and fellowships, including artist residency fellowships at the Ucross Foundation, Millay Colony for the Arts, and Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, an Individual Artist Fellowship Grant from the Oregon Arts Commission, a Ford Family Foundation Grant and a Professional Development Grant from the Regional Arts & Culture Council and another from the Oregon Arts Commission. Her work has been shown in group and solo shows in museums and galleries regionally, nationally and internationally including shows at Workplace Gallery in Antwerp, Belgium; Cornish Gallery in Seattle (WA); the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts (PA); the Everson Museum (NY); Davenport Museum of Art and Des Moines Art Center (IA); and the Charles Allis Art Museum (WI).  It has also been featured in New American Paintings and the Manifest International Painting Annual. In addition to her individual studio work, Tomlinson works collaboratively with Sean Regan, a video artist, and collaborates with the group, Binslab, an artist’s group formed around the examination of waste and value. Their installations and videos have been shown in Portland, Seattle, and Salem, OR.


Tomlinson has held teaching positions in graduate and undergraduate programs at many universities and colleges nationally, including University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Carnegie Mellon, Syracuse University, University of Iowa and Dartmouth College. She earned her undergraduate degree in literature and painting from Bennington College and her MFA in painting from the University of Oregon.
