ABOUT THE PLAY: As the subtitle suggests, this is a ‘postmodern’ adaptation of Chekhov’sThe Seagull.  It has a completely contemporary setting and (as the F-bomb in the title indicates) contemporary language.  The thing I love about the script is how artfully it preserves the heart and soul of the original while finding its own language, its own humor, its own relationship with an audience.  What is that heart and soul?  It’s a play about love, first of all:  people finding love, never finding love, finding love and losing it. And it’s a play about art:  about how one generation sets standards in art and the next generation rejects them in favor of something new.  Not all the characters in the play are artists, but they are all caught up in an artistic world of actors, directors, and writers.  It’s a world of striving, where the goals of finding love and creating art intertwine in surprising and affecting ways.  Like the Chekhov original, there are no easy paths forward: to be human is to endure complication and loss; the play offers compassion for its characters and the circumstances that threaten to turn to tragedy, but it also sees the humor and absurdity of life.  And it’s meta-theatrical in a fun way.
