Curatorial statement:
As we celebrate the 20th year of the Ray Warren Symposium on Race and Ethnic Studies, we were inspired by this year’s co-chairs, finding their message relevant to our understanding of the art exhibition. They highlighted the importance of studying our history, which goes beyond providing a mere glimpse into the past. It acts as a guiding light for our current endeavors and serves as a blueprint for the future. As we commemorate two decades of the Ray Warren Symposium on Race and Ethnic Studies, our focus reaches beyond the path that led us to this point. We reflect on a pivotal question: What lies ahead?

How does the creation of art inform our understanding of where we have been and where we are headed? The curated works of this gallery encapsulate each artist’s relationship to their past, present, and future, through an examination of heritage, environment, and personal or familial representation. The works reckon with sorrow, pride, belonging, remembrance, and dreams. We aspire to initiate dialogues that ask us to reimagine our society—a future that promotes human rights, love, liberation, and justice.
