Variable credit courses

Course which can be taken for variable credit (see list below) will have multiple sections for any given instructor – one for each level of credit. The instructor needs to choose the correct section (with the correct number of credits) and grant the student instructor consent to register. (See faculty consent.)

For example, a course which can be taken for 1-2 credits will have two sections – one for students who should earn 1 credit, and one for students who should earn 2 credits.

• Both sections will be offered at the same time, in the same room with the same instructor. This will allow students to register on-line for whichever section is granted approval by the instructor.

For the vast majority of our variable credit courses, there will be only two to four sections because most are only taught by one instructor. This will mean that each instructor sees multiple sections of the course on the roster list in Self Service, depending upon the number of credits allowed by the course.

For courses such as PSY-495, there may be multiple instructors teaching the course. The instructors will only see their own sections, but students will see them all. When multiple instructors teach the same course in the same semester, we label the sections by instructor initial.

For example, Jennifer LaBounty’s one-credit section will be PSY-495-JL01 and her 2 credit section would be PSY-495-JL02, etc.
