      Carl Appleton BA ’17, recipient of the first Carl Appleton Award for Outstanding Perseverance, was also a member of the inaugural group of Portland Community College’s Athletics Hall of Fame. He is currently pursuing a PhD in criminology at George Mason University.

      Cassandra Broadwin BA ’17 is running a fundraiser to build a movie theatre in rural Madhya Pradesh, India. As a Dinah Dodds Endowment recipient, Broadwin spent her time studying abroad in India working to produce a documentary film about Janwaar Castle, a skate park in Madhya Pradesh that has had a large impact on the lives of the villagers. Now that the film is complete, she hopes to bring it back to the village for a screening. The fundraiser can be found at www.gofundme.com/namaskate.

      Erin R. Carlson BA ’17, July 24, 2017, age 22. A music lover, Carlson played and wrote her own music on the piano and guitar. She was also a painter, illustrator, and writer of poetry and prose. When she wasn’t enjoying or creating art, she spent time with nature. Her favorite destination was Yellowstone National Park, where she hoped to one day work as a geochemist. Survivors include her parents, Scot and Chris, and her sister, Lauren.

      Andrea Dean BA ’17 writes: “I got into a tech and policy fellowship through the National Security Institute, so I’ll spend four weekends in DC/NYC over the next year learning about the government and policy.”

      Andrea Dean BA ’17 works at Amazon as a software development engineer for the Amazon Go team. She says she wanted to utilize her knowledge and skills related to computer vision and machine learning. Dean credits Iva Stavrov, associate professor of mathematical sciences, and Peter Drake, associate professor of mathematical sciences, with inspiring and assisting her on her path to success. “Ultimately,” says Dean, “I hope to ensure we’re using technology to create a more just society.”

      Emma Grillo BA ’17 has joined the New York Times as a news assistant. Her writing has been published in Vice, Vox, New York Magazine, The Outline, Eater, and Interview Magazine.

      Jessica Meyerzon BA ’17, who double-majored in international affairs and foreign languages (Spanish and Russian), received a Fulbright English Teaching Award, which funded one year of living and working in Belarus. She currently teaches English language courses at the Baranovichi State University, gives lectures on American culture at local schools, and leads the Baranovichi Library English Club. Meyerzon’s experiences in Belarus are described in more detail in her blog, https://fulbrightinbelarus.wordpress.com.

      Shay Myerson BA ’17 is a recent graduate of the Land Arts of the American West program at Texas Tech University. Some of the work she developed during the program was displayed in the university’s museum in spring 2019. A reviewer from the Texas visual arts site Glasstire called Myerson’s work “promising and thought-provoking.”
