What’s your favorite class? Why?

My favorite class is Organic Chemistry with Professor Louis Kuo. The class is challenging, but navigating the course material with a supportive group of students and professors creates a fun environment to study a fascinating subject.

What made you want to come to Lewis & Clark?

I wanted to attend a small school because I perform best in smaller class environments where I can connect with my peers and work closely with my professors. The diverse education I am receiving at L&C has strengthened my creativity and critical thinking skills as I study a variety of subjects that interest me in my preferred environment.

What do you like or find most interesting about your major?

Biochemistry and molecular biology is an interdisciplinary major that allows me to pursue a degree with a variety of opportunities in science. I have an affinity for both chemistry and biology, and the intersection of the two is where I find myself the most engaged with my studies. The other students in my major and the faculty have contributed to my curiosity about the content I am learning and I am excited to see what lies ahead as I continue in my major.

What do you like or find most interesting about your minor?

I am grateful that I am able to minor in art and art history alongside my science studies. What I find most inviting is the freedom I have to express my artistic ideas in class and I am encouraged to follow those desires to develop my artistic voice.

Tell us about your support systems and social outlets on campus: people, activities, clubs, res halls, etc.

I have found many spaces on campus where I have developed a strong sense of belonging through leadership. As the copresident of LC Dance Company, I share my passion for dance with other students and provide an artistic space for people to express themselves through movement. Also, as trip leader with College Outdoors, I have connected with nature and other people who have an appreciation for getting outdoors. I am so grateful for the amazing friends I’ve made within these two communities.

If you went on a New Student Trip with College Outdoors, how did it shape your experience as an incoming student?

I went on the Backpacking Mount St. Helens New Student Trip before coming to school. I was really nervous about coming to college because I had taken two gap years and was older than most of the incoming students; I was uncertain about how that would affect my experience. The trip offered me the opportunity to build a smaller community of people to ease my transition into college and connect with other students who had taken time off before coming to school. Since that experience, I have led the same trip with College Outdoors and I am honored to facilitate the formation of a community for incoming students.

If you have studied or will study overseas while at Lewis & Clark, how did you choose your program?

I came to Lewis & Clark knowing I wanted to study abroad in Berlin. I have always wanted to live in Berlin for a period of time to experience the vibrant contemporary dance culture. Once I learned the program at L&C included a biochemistry course, I was thrilled! The program will allow me to advance in my major and experience a city that I have always dreamed of living in. It is the perfect combination and I hope it will encourage me to succeed.

What advice do you have for incoming students?

The transition into college can be difficult, especially if you have taken a more unique route to get there. My advice is to not be intimidated by the challenges you will encounter as you enter a new stage of life at college. Through engaging with the community on campus in academics and extracurricular activities, you can build a support system and meet new people who will make your experience at L&C memorable.

How has College Outdoors influenced and improved your college experience?

Before coming to college, I had not participated in many outdoor activities because I never had the time or the opportunity to do so. College Outdoors made outdoor activities accessible and affordable for me, and I was able to deepen my appreciation for the outdoors through the trips they offer. I’ve not only found a social community to engage with but also employment working in their warehouse where they store all of the gear and in leadership with leading rewarding outdoors trips for other students who were just like me!
