Major: Rhetoric & Media Studies
Hi! My name is Julia McPherson and I am in the Class of 2019 cohort of the Pamplin Society of Fellows. I was born and raised in North Carolina, with family scattered from the Appalachian Mountains to the southeastern coastline. When I’m not studying for classes or involved in other campus activities, I enjoy cooking, hiking, and drawing monsters. My academic interests are primarily media and culture studies, media production, history, and ethnic studies. I have been teaching myself graphic design/digital illustration since the spring of 2017, and it has become a true passion of mine. I recently did an independent study within the Rhetoric & Media Studies department where I digitally illustrated friendly monsters into photos taken around Portland, and then turned it into an Instagram account. This allowed me to turn my passion for design and hobby of drawing goofy monsters into useful, tangible skills in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and social media marketing. After graduation I would love to go into advertising or be part of a communications team for a non-profit, although I’m definitely open to different exciting opportunities that may come up!I was born and raised in the US South, but decided college was the time to do something completely different than go to the huge state school all of my friends were going to attend. My family jokes that ” Julia flung herself as far away as she could without gettin’ her feet wet,” and I suppose that is true, but I’ve been eagerly exploring all the L&C community and the PNW has to offer since! Growing up in and around often-misunderstood intersections of struggle has motivated me to steer my future towards a goal of making people care about things they should care about, so I’m majoring in Rhetoric & Media Studies, minoring in Ethnic Studies, and taking advantage of service opportunities as they come my way.
