Rick Turoczy, Silicon Florist
Meet the leading force behind Portland’s tech and startup culture of curiosity, craft and collaboration, and hear what he has to say about inclusiveness and diversity in Portland and his zeal to support even more founders.
Rick Turoczy has been working with startups, accelerators, incubators and founders worldwide for more than 20 years. He has blogged about the Portland startup community on Silicon Florist for a decade – even though he claims numerous people have begged him to stop. This led Rick to cofound PIE (the Portland Incubator Experiment), a startup accelerator (designed to help companies, governments, etc. collaborate with founders for mutual benefit) formed in partnership with global creative agency Wieden+Kennedy. Those efforts led him to help start TechfestNW, a tech event run in collaboration with Willamette Week and MusicFestNW, which has been dubbed “the next SXSW” by Fortune magazine.
He writes for one of the top tech blogs in the world, has judged startups for SXSW for more than five years, has being named to the Portland Business Journal’s “Forty under 40” and “2014 Small Business Advocate of the Year,” been elected to the boards of the Technology Association of Oregon and Oregon Entrepreneurs Network. and advises the City of Portland on startups
Rick cofounded Oregon Story Board, an accelerator designed to help digital storytellers like filmmakers and video game creators build scalable and sustainable business. And the amazing stories from all of the startups throughout the years led to him co-founding his latest project, Built Oregon, a digital magazine celebrating amazing entrepreneurs throughout Oregon. All of this led to his writing an open source book on startup accelerators that enables anyone, anywhere, to start an accelerator of their own.
Among other things, Rick talks about Portland’s effort to be the most inclusive ecosystem and how it is a magnet for talent and the latest startups. “In Portland, we don’t make tons and tons of subpar product. We make small amounts of amazing product.”
