Knot Invariants: The Jones Polynomial and its Generalizations

The main goal of knot theory is to be able to distinguish distinct knots. We do so by using knot invariants. Knot invariants are characteristics of knots such that when two knots are equivalent, they share the same characteristic. This talk will focus on three such invariants: the Jones polynomial, the HOMFLY polynomial, and Khovanov cohomology. All three of these associate polynomials to knots in different ways.
