Oregon State Bar honors Professor Powers with Sustainability Award
The Oregon State Bar (OSB) is presenting the 2019 President’s Sustainability Award to Lewis & Clark Law Professor Melissa Powers for her “contributions to the goal of sustainability in Oregon’s legal profession through education, advocacy, leadership in sustainable business practices, or other efforts.”
Powers, a Jeffrey Bain Faculty Scholar, teaches climate change law, electricity regulation, renewable energy law, the Clean Air Act, administrative law, and torts. She founded the Green Energy Institute at the law school, an organization that designs policies to transition to a zero-carbon energy system.
Powers’s research focuses on energy reform, climate change mitigation, and pollution control. She has co-authored three books, Climate Change and the Law, Principles of Environmental Law, and Beyond Zero-Sum Environmentalism, and she has written several articles and book chapters focused on climate and energy law. In 2014-2015, Powers was a Fulbright-Schuman Scholar researching renewable energy laws in Denmark and Spain.
“Melissa is one of the leading experts in her field and very deserving of this award,” said Dean Jennifer Johnson. “We are very proud to see her recognized by the OSB for all her hard work and dedication to sustainability.”
The OSB Sustainability Award is one of several “President’s Awards” that the organization gives annually. Powers and other award recipients will be honored by the OSB 2019 at a luncheon on November 15, 2019 at the Sentinel Hotel in Portland.
