New Student Orientation (NSO)

Getting Ready

Class registration begins August 1st! Take steps now for a successful academic start. Don’t be intimidated by the amount of information.  We included everything in hopes of making the instructions as clear as possible. If you’re confused, contact nso@lclark.edu or call us at 503-768-7182.

Summer Instructions

We’re excited you’ve decided to join us this fall! Because the first few days on campus are so busy for new students, we have to ask you to complete several important tasks this summer. The following checklist below should look familiar to you: you received an abbreviated version with your confirmation packet from the Office of Admissions.  We hope you’ve already completed most of these tasks and can jump right to the Registration button above and begin preparing for course registration.  Be advised that some browsers work better than others, especially for WebAdvisor.  In our experience, Safari works well.

If you haven’t already done so, please complete the following tasks as soon as possible.

Glossary

WebAdvisor
WebAdvisor is the website you’ll use to search for courses to take, locate your registration times, and register for classes.

WebAdvisor User ID
You’ll be asked for a User ID to log in to WebAdvisor. Your User ID is the first part of your student email address up to the @. For example, if your email address is smith@lclark.edu, then your User ID is smith.

Create Your Lewis & Clark Account

Visit go.lclark.edu/create_account to create your Lewis & Clark account. This account will establish your email and also create your WebAdvisor User ID (see Glossary), which you will need to register for classes. All communication from the college will be sent to this new email address.

If you are having trouble with this step, try entering just two of the three required pieces of information. Further questions can be directed to the IT department at 503-768-7225.

Access Your Lewis & Clark Email Account

Once you have created your Lewis & Clark account, you will log in to your new email account through Gmail. Visit mail.google.com to get started. To log in, rather than using the @gmail.com extension, you will use your full Lewis & Clark email address (for example, smith@lclark.edu) and password to log in.

NOTE: It may take a few minutes after creating your account for you to be able to access gmail.

The college will use this email address exclusively to communicate with you this summer and throughout your academic career. Please check your email often.

Submit Your Emergency Contact Information

It is critical that we have accurate contact information for you and your family in the event of an emergency. We recognize that you may have concerns about your privacy. The information you provide will be held in a limited-access, password-protected portion of Lewis & Clark’s database and used only in compliance with the institution’s policies and procedures.

  1. Go to WebAdvisor. (Clicking this link will open a new window in your browser allowing you to click back to this page for step by step instructions.)
  2. Log in using your WebAdvisor User ID and password (see above if you have questions about this step).
  3. Click on Students.
  4. Under User Account, click on Emergency Contact.
  5. Enter the appropriate contact information.
  6. Click on the Update/Verify button to complete the entry.
Complete the Advising Questionnaire

The Advising Questionnaire is crucial in helping us match you with a faculty advisor and in preparing both of you for an effective first meeting during NSO.  Complete and submit the Advising Questionnaire by July 10. While the responsibility for the trajectory of your academic program is ultimately yours, your advisor will be there to help and guide you along the way.

Submit Your Exploration and Discovery Preferences

Exploration and Discovery is our innovative, two-semester Core Curriculum required of all first-year students. Instead of registering for Exploration and Discovery yourself, you will submit six preferences between June 1 and June 25, be assigned one of your preferences on July 7, and be able to see your assignment on WebAdvisor by July 11. Links to course descriptions, the preference form, and frequently asked questions can be found on the website, go.lclark.edu/exploration_and_discovery.

At the end of May, you will receive an email from NSO that will provide detailed instructions and links for this process. If you still have questions about Exploration and Discovery, please contact the program coordinator at 503-768-7208 or explore@lclark.edu.

Instructions

  1. Review information about the sections of Exploration and Discovery and the faculty who teach them.
  2. When you have determined the top six sections you prefer, complete the Preference Form.
  3. Complete and submit the online Exploration and Discovery Section Preference Form. You will need your Lewis & Clark email address and your Lewis & Clark ID number* to complete this form and ensure your preferences are linked to you.
  4. You will receive an email (at your ‘@lclark.edu’ email address) notifying you of your E&D placement no later than Monday, July 7.

*To locate your ID number, you’ll need to use WebAdvisor. Follow instructions at the bottom of this page under “Explore WebAdvisor.” Then under Academic Profile, select My Holds & Authorizations. Your ID number will be listed in the left corner of the screen.

Request Final High School Transcript and AP/IB Exam Scores

It is important to have your final transcript and AP/IB exam scores sent to Lewis & Clark. AP or IB exam credit may affect your placement in some subjects. The Advanced Standing section of the Lewis & Clark Catalog has a subject breakdown. To access this information, visit go.lclark.edu/college/advanced/standing. The college typically receives these scores in early July.

Take the Academic Integrity Tutorial

Lewis & Clark believes that each member of the community is responsible for the integrity of his or her individual academic performance. In addition, because each act of dishonesty harms the entire community, all individuals—students, faculty, and staff members alike—are responsible for encouraging the integrity of others by their own example, by confronting individuals they observe committing dishonest acts, and/or by discussing such actions with a faculty member or academic dean, who will respect the confidentiality of such discussions.

It is important for all students to understand what constitutes academic dishonesty. Review the Academic Integrity Policy and complete the Academic Integrity Tutorial by July 28.

Checking SAT/ACT and AP/IB Scores in WebAdvisor

If you want to take a course with prerequisites that you believe should have been satisfied by exam scores, make sure that those have been recorded in WebAdvisor. To see if your scores have been recorded, follow these steps.

  1. Log in to WebAdvisor using your Lewis & Clark user name and password (see left if you have questions about logging in to WebAdvisor).
  2. Click Students.
  3. Under Academic Profile, select Test Summary for SAT/ACT, AP/IB scores, and the results of your placement exams.
