Avoiding Job Scams
At Lewis & Clark College, your safety and well-being are top priorities, especially as you navigate your job search. While many opportunities are legitimate, some job postings and offers may be scams designed to exploit students. It’s essential to recognize the warning signs and take precautions to protect yourself. We’re here to help you navigate your job search with confidence. Stay informed, trust your instincts, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you need support.
Too Good to Be True Offers
If a job promises unusually high pay for minimal work, it’s likely a scam. Be cautious of jobs offering salaries far beyond the norm for entry-level or part-time positions.
Requests for Personal Information Upfront
Legitimate employers do not ask for sensitive information like your Social Security number or bank account details early in the hiring process. If you’re asked to provide this information before an interview, it’s a red flag.
Payment Before Work
Scammers may ask you to pay for training, certifications, or supplies before starting a job. Never send money to secure a position.
Unprofessional Communication
Be wary of job postings or emails with poor grammar, spelling mistakes, or generic language.
Pressure to Act Quickly
Scammers may pressure you to make quick decisions, such as accepting a job offer immediately or providing personal information within a short time frame.
Research the Company
Look up the company’s website, social media, and reviews from other employees. Verify that the contact information matches what is provided in the job listing.
Verify the Job Posting
If you receive a job offer from an unfamiliar source, cross-check the position on the company’s official website or trusted job boards like Handshake.
Be Skeptical of Unsolicited Job Offers
If you’re contacted about a job you didn’t apply for, be cautious. Verify the legitimacy of the job through trusted sources.
Consult the Career Center
If you’re unsure about the legitimacy of a job offer, bring it to the Lewis & Clark Career Center for review. We can help you evaluate whether it’s safe to pursue.
