24th Annual Symposium: A Post-Truth Environment?

Our 24th annual Environment Across Boundaries Symposium includes in-person, live-streamed, and online events on October 19-21, 2021 at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, OR. The theme reflects a major challenge of our times:

What is environmentalism, a movement grounded in science and facts, in a post-truth era?

We welcome political theorist Dr. Naveed Mansoori as our keynote speaker. Dr. Mansoori’s scholarship has interrogated the nature of truth, media, and propaganda in the socio-political context of Iran. His keynote address on Tuesday evening October 19 applies this research to the larger context of environmental facts, politics, and persuasion.

The fall 2021 schedule includes additional events designed to explore applications to environmental law and policy; opportunities to exchange thoughts on environment and post-truth with participants from a wide range of countries and cultural perspectives; and skills training in facilitating constructive environmental conversation in a post-truth era. Additional events are designed exclusively for students and alumni of Lewis & Clark College.

Post-truth need not imply that environmental progress is impossible. But it may offer a challenge to find new ways to cross boundaries—new ways to listen and learn from these post-truth times.

Registration is required for all events.

The student co-chairs for the 2021 ENVX Symposium are:
