Expert in Residence

The Bates Center currently have three Experts in Residence in the areas of Law, Health Care and Agriculture and Advocacy in addition to an Entrepreneur in Residence. They serve as volunteer experts to all Lewis & Clark students. The Experts program is a way for students to learn first-hand skills from industry experts. Our Experts can lead guest lessons, give classroom feedback, and will meet with students one-on-one upon request.

Entrepreneur in Residence

Mitch Daugherty from Built Oregon joined the Bates Center staff in 2022. Mitch officially started with the Center in September of 2022 but has been a supporter of the Center for many years as a Mitch Daugherty Winterim mentor and internship provider for our students. His role will now expand to meet with students to advice and counsel on new business ideas. He has office hours in the eLab, (JR Howard #344) every Monday from 1pm - 3pm. Students can drop in during that time or email in advance to schedule a time. Mitch will also serve as our downtown (and all of Oregon) connection to business, nonprofit, and entrepreneurial orgs and individuals and bring leaders to campus for our Lunch with a Leader program and Winterim

 

LAW

Wondering what legal issues you should consider when exploring ideas? Do you need to form a business entity? Thinking about law school? Meet our Expert in Residence, Robert Scott, JD  ’11. Robert is the former General Counsel of Lattice and former General Counsel and VP of Operations at Opal. He also founded and successfully operated a fractional GC law firm, Jibe Law. Robert is particularly skilled at early-stage fundraising and building privacy compliance programs. Office hours will be available via Zoom two - three times per semester. Robert will meet individually with students on topics such as the legal issues facing startups and the transition from student to professional. In the spring of 2024 Expert in Residence Hours are available virtually in 20 minute increments during the following dates: 

  • March 15, 10am - 11am
  • April 17, 2pm - 3pm

health care concern. Mohan understands the landscape, technology, barriers, opportunities and equity considerations in health care research, delivery and access networks. Ask questions, test ideas, or just listen/learn.

Born and raised in Singapore, Mohan watched how nations transform. It shaped how he strives to create lasting business transformation, which includes every employee personally finding “true north” in cause through their own transformation.

Mohan authored three books in the field of transformation and for 10 years taught at the Kellogg School of Management. An experienced entrepreneur with two startups under his belt, Mohan has set his sights on healthcare transformation.

As a former Singaporean TV talk show host, musician with 20 music copyrighted songs to his name, TEDx speaker, and the first healthcare executive to audition and lose at America’s Got Talent, he hopes to inspire others with courage and teach all to enjoy innovation.

Beth Ford serves as President and CEO of Land O’Lakes, Inc., a Fortune 200 food production and agribusiness company that is also a nearly 100-year-old farmer-owned cooperative. Beth’s 35-year career spans six industries at seven companies. Since joining Land O’Lakes in 2011, she has held a variety of roles leading the farmer-to-fork business offerings. Today, she is a passionate advocate on behalf of farmers and rural America with the goal of connecting people, particularly in urban areas, to the farmers and rural communities who grow their food.

A native of Sioux City, Iowa, Beth holds a bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University and a master’s degree in business from Columbia University Business School. She also sits on the Board of Directors for the Business Roundtable, the Fortune 150 company PACCAR, Inc., and numerous other industry, nonprofit and university boards.

Beth has been recognized by Fortune as one of the World’s 50 Greatest Leaders and Most Powerful Women and was named too Fast Company’s Most Productive People and Best Leaders lists, among other honors. She was also featured in the “60 Minutes” segment entitled “The Farmers Advocate” during the fall of 2019.
