Oregon’s small colleges, universities managing COVID-19 successfully - so far
Lewis & Clark President Wim Wiewel led a group of Oregon private college and university presidents in a column that appeared in The Oregonian on Sunday, Oct. 25. Rogers Science Research Program, which supports collaborative scientific research with Lewis & Clark faculty. Students Win Big at the Invent Oregon Collegiate Competition
Ramez Attia BA ’21 and Matthew Brown BA ’21 were named the winning team at the annual Invent Oregon Collegiate State Finals, earning $10,000, plus an additional $2,000 as People’s Choice winners. Professor of Chemistry Nikolaus Loening was recently awarded a $297,000 research grant by the National Science Foundation to support studies related to the “molecular underpinnings of life.” Loening’s combined grant efforts have aided the college in purchasing a new 600 MHz NMR Spectrometer, built to study a wide range of chemical and biological processes.Alumnus-Produced Podcast Earns Webby Award

Cole Harris BA ’20 is Lewis & Clark’s most recent alum to receive a Fulbright award following his undergraduate degree. A national leader in test-optional admissions, Lewis & Clark has updated its long-standing policy. Starting with the fall 2021 incoming class, applicants who prefer not to submit standardized test scores will no longer be required to submit a portfolio of academic work in their place.
From the Archives: Ben Johnson, The Workes of Ben Jonson (1616)
The workes of Beniamin Ionsonappeared in the fall of 1616 in a large, imposing folio volume. Running nearly 575 leaves, Ben Jonson’s Workesis a testament to his skills, popularity, but most primarily his determination to have his writings published together in a single volume, demonstrating his flexibility and progression as an English writer. At Lewis & Clark we use our copy of the folio - one of only two held at a liberal arts - to teach lessons about print culture in the sixteenth century.
Faculty Approve Health Studies Minor
Faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences have approved the creation of a new health studies minor. Drawing upon Lewis & Clark’s strong culture of interdisciplinary learning and current course offerings, the new minor recognizes the growing interest students have in public health and the value of a liberal arts approach to solving the world’s current and future public health challenges.McDonagh and Talamantez take top two spots at national championship
Lewis & Clark’s Raine McDonagh (’20) and Mary Talamantez (’20) were named the top two individual speakers in the nation at the 2020 National Parliamentary Debate Association’s Championship Tournament.Hispanic Studies Professor Recognized for Teaching Excellence
Assistant Professor of Hispanic Studies Magalí Rabasa has received the Arnold L. and Lois S. Graves Award. The grant will allow Rabasa to pursue research on feminist economies of knowledge in the Americas over a two-year period. This summer, she will travel to New York to conduct research in the Interference Archive, a space that catalogues the cultural production of social movements.

In new rankings released by the Peace Corps, Lewis & Clark is in the top 10 on the list of volunteer-producing colleges and universities. With 12 alumni currently serving around the world, Lewis & Clark ranks seventh among small schools in the past year.Special Collections Acquires First Italian Illuminated Manuscript in the Portland Area
Watzek Library’s Special Collections and Archives has recently added another rare book, an Italian book of hours, to its growing collection of archival materials. The book, valued at more than $45,000, was acquired thanks to a highly competitive grant from the B.H. Breslauer Foundation. Starting next spring, students will have the opportunity to examine the text in depth in Professor Karen Gross’s manuscript analysis course.PDX Hillel Takes Top Honors
Recently, Hillel International presented awards to individuals and campuses for creating innovative experiences and meaningful connections for students to develop stronger ties to their Jewish identities. The Greater Portland Hillel—which serves Lewis & Clark College, Portland State University, and Reed College—received Hillel International’s highest honor, the Phillip H. and Susan Rudd Cohen Outstanding Campus Award.
Lewis & Clark’s Street Addresses Will Change May 1
In an effort to improve 9-1-1 dispatcher emergency response time, the Portland City Council will divide Southwest Portland in two on May 1, creating a sixth sextant called South Portland. Area street addresses will change as a result. - EVENTS
