College of Arts and Sciences celebrates recent fundraising successes

The College of Arts and Science recently received a $500,000 gift from Life Trustee Fred Fields and a $250,000 grant from the W.M. Keck Foundation.
“Fred’s gift could not come at a better time as we seek to attract an outstanding new president and to build the base of support for the Annual Fund and the comprehensive campaign,” said Interim President Atkinson. “As past chair and longtime member of the Board of Trustees, Fred hopes that his gift will inspire others to increase their own personal support for Lewis & Clark.”
Fields’ gift is unrestricted and designated for College of Arts and Sciences operations in 2010. Fields joined the board in 1985, helped create the Morgan S. Odell Professorship in the Humanities in 1990, and made the lead gift for the Fred W. Fields Center for the Visual Arts in 1993.
The $250,000 grant from the W.M. Keck Foundation will go toward developing curriculum in the area of nanoscience—a field that brings together scientists from many disciplines to study small structures.
The principal investigators of this grant are Kellar Autumn, professor of biology, Anne Bentley, assistant professor of chemistry, and Julio de Paula, professor of chemistry and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
