Alumni & Parent Programs

Peter Dempsey

Class of 2001
Blacksburg, Virginia

Peter Dempsey came to Lewis & Clark from Potomac, Maryland.  He was drawn to the school due to its strong liberal arts education, beautiful campus, access to the outdoors, and opportunities to study abroad. As a student, Peter was an active member of the Lewis & Clark community, working for the Office of Alumni Relations, serving as Captain of the Men’s Club Lacrosse Team, and representing his classmates as an elected member of the General Allocations Board.

Consistent with the Pioneer spirit instilled upon him at Lewis & Clark, Peter enjoys exploring new places, gaining new experiences, and learning new things.  After spending his junior year studying abroad in China, Peter graduated in 2001 with a B.A. in International Relations. He returned to China immediately after graduation to enroll in a graduate program administered by the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies where he studied US-China relations from a Chinese perspective, entirely in Mandarin Chinese.  He later worked at a British law firm in Shanghai, where he served as a translator and advised multinational corporations on their investments in China.

After living in China for four years, Peter returned to the United States and continued working as an advisor to companies on their business investment strategies overseas.  He ultimately earned his M.B.A from the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business and has been leading various operations within publicly-traded Fortune 500 companies ever since.  He currently serves as General Manager for a technology company that uses electrical systems to automate production facilities and develop cutting edge robots capable of performing laparoscopic surgeries, picking apples, and enabling driverless vehicles.  Peter is actively engaged with career development and recruiting programs at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business and has also founded a charity that raises funds for non-profit organizations based in Southwest Virginia.

Peter resides in the college town of Blacksburg, VA where he continues to enjoy nearby access to the great outdoors including the Jefferson National Forest, the Great Smokey Mountains, and the oldest river in North America, the New River.
