Class of 1969
Anne Spencer Caputo grew up in a small logging and farming community in western Oregon and is a fifth generation Oregonian. She was drawn to Lewis & Clark in 1965 when she followed Dr. Jean Ward, her high school speech and debate teacher, to Portland. She is an active member of the College community, serving on the Philanthropy Council, the 1969 class reunion committee and a new member of the Albany Society. She is retired from a senior marketing position at Dow Jones and earlier marketing positions at Reuters, Knight-Ridder and the Lockheed Corporation. Additionally, Anne has been an adjunct faculty member at the University of Maryland, College of Library and Information Services, and a member of the distance education faculty for the University of Tennessee, School of Information Sciences and the iSchool at Drexel University.
Anne is a past president of the Special Libraries Association (SLA), the largest global association of libraries and information centers. She is also a member of the Board of Directors for Lubuto Library Partners, a nonprofit dedicated to building libraries and community centers in Zambia and Central Africa. Additionally she is on the board of the College of Visual and Performing Arts at George Mason University. She has served on the Board of Visitors for the University of Tennessee, San Jose State University and The Catholic University of America. Anne is currently serving as a volunteer chaplain at Inova Alexandria Hospital and a member of hospital board.
In addition to her history degree from Lewis & Clark, Anne holds advanced degrees in architectural history from the University of Oregon and in library and information science from San Jose State University.
Anne lives in Alexandria, Virginia where she enjoys photographing architectural elements on National Trust and other historic buildings. She is a strong believer in the value of a liberal arts education, is passionate about the arts and has been a proud holder of Washington National Opera season tickets for more than 30 years. She is also a deeply involved Master Gardener, flower arranger and flower show judge.
