  • Nina Oishi BA ’18 was selected by Lewis & Clark faculty members to receive the American Association of University Women Senior Woman Recognition Award. Oishi cites Associate Professor Heather Smith-Cannoy and Assistant Professor Elizabeth Bennett as some of her “brilliant role models in the international affairs department.” Oishi has already moved to Boston to work for a nonprofit that focuses on national consumer healthcare advocacy.

  • Kate Smock BA ’18 was the recipient of the 2018 Rena J. Ratte Award, which recognizes outstanding academic and personal achievement. Smock, a nontraditional student, transferred to Lewis & Clark from community college. She was soon offered the opportunity to intern with NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon, where she developed a fundraising guide for the Safe Travels Fund to assist donors contributing to women seeking access to health care. She plans to continue research on transnational gentrification, and ultimately, to pursue a PhD in sociology.

  • Makayela Johnson BA ’18, a hip-hop artist in Portland who performs as KayelaJ, was profiled in Willamette Week and appeared at the PDX Pop Now! festival in July 2018.

  • Eric Sauer BA ’18 was a participant in the prestigious Western States Ultra, the oldest 100-mile trail race in the world. Beginning in Squaw Valley, California, runners climb more than 18,000 feet then descend over 22,000 before reaching the finish line in Auburn, California. Sauer finished 162nd after more than 26 hours on the road.

  • Shelby Ziccardi BA ’18 was a recipient of the 2018 NCWIT Collegiate Award, which honors exceptional accomplishments in computing by undergraduate and graduate women. Ziccardi’s project, “Individual Calibration of Redirected Walking Thresholds in Virtual Reality,” focuses on the VR problem of presenting users with large virtual spaces when the actual spaces they occupy are very limited. Her project addresses this problem by tricking the brain, increasing immersion and depth of experience. The result is quick and accurate calibration of the VR experience, tailored to the individual.

  • Jackson Thein BA ’18 is attending the University of Edinburgh, where he is pursuing a master’s degree in public health. “I’m very excited to see what this path will hold for me.”

  • Harrison Smith BA ’18, the multi-instrumentalist behind the artful punk project Turtlenecked, released High Scores of the Heart in April 2018. His new release landed him a mention in NPR Illinois’ “Songs We Love” feature. Smith, a prolific songwriter, produced High Scores shortly after his 2017 album Vulture. Both albums, along with earlier recordings, can be found on the Turtlenecked Bandcamp page, https://turtlenecked.bandcamp.com.
