How is Kamala Harris’s training as an attorney and experience in the courtroom and the Senate shaping her candidacy? “Law school trains people in asking good questions,” notes Lewis & Clark Professor Tung Yin, something Harris displayed when serving on Senate committees. And, notes Lewis & Clark Professor Michele Okoh, good prosecutors know how to be quiet, how to nod a lot, and how to keep witnesses talking – sometimes to the detriment of the witnesses. “We’re seeing some of that in this election cycle,” Okoh said. “She’s just nodding and letting the Trump team say things that are less than helpful for them.” Given how much Harris’s background as a prosecutor and her four years on the Senate Intelligence Committee shape how she sees the world, Tung adds, they will likely drive the way she serves if elected president.
