Degree and Class Year
What three words would you use to describe L&C?
What’s your favorite class? How has it expanded your knowledge?
I really appreciate my first computer science class taught by Professor Jens Mache who is now my advisor too. He brought me into this magic digital world and gave me another angle to think of problems using computer language. I still remember the first program I made by myself, called “Hello world!” It was astonishing, no matter how simple it was. Jens’s teaching style stimulated us to come up with many creative ideas. By taking this class, I finally made the decision to major in computer science.
What made you want to come to Lewis & Clark?
Lewis & Clark is a wonderful college with students from all over the world. People are all super kind and friendly in this beautiful environment. As I stay on campus sharing my culture in this huge community, I naturally feel like I’m at home. The professors are also great. Whenever you struggle in your academic problems, you are free to go and talk to your professor. Besides, there are lots of opportunities and challenges.
How do you feel supported as an international student at Lewis & Clark?
I started to feel supported the first day I came to the campus. L&C has a special international student orientation. It was a good time for me to get used to my brand new college life. There are always many kind staff members in the international student office waiting to help us, and I feel super comfortable stopping by whether I have questions or not. There are lots of cultural sharing activities which benefit our international students, such as China night, ISLC cooking events, and the international fair.
What advice do you have for prospective students?
Challenge yourself, feel free to talk with each other and share your experiences, and you will definitely enjoy your college life.
What’s your favorite thing about living in Portland?
I love to explore the Columbia River Gorge and the Oregon coast. As you hike in the mountains surrounding the city, you will find the nature in Portland is the best!!! Also, it’s really cool to go snowboarding on Mount Hood!
How do you manage stress?
When I feel pressure, I go back through campus. Walking on the trails around campus always helps me to feel relax.
How has Lewis & Clark changed you?
I was a shy person and always afraid to talk in front of a group of people. But, after I came to Lewis & Clark, I became more confident in talking with others and more comfortable sharing my experiences.
