What was your path to Lewis & Clark?
I was the director of the experimental college at Oregon State University and had organized a lot of outdoor programs. Former College Outdoors Director Kelly Smith had gone through the program there. He needed an assistant and told me I should apply.
What did you enjoy most about your work?
The excitement and enthusiasm of the students when they first explore outdoor places. So many students are from urban environments or parts of the country that have no spectacular waterfalls, ocean beaches, or mountain views.
What’s something people might not know about you?
I’ve been here long enough that I think everybody knows everything!
What was your favorite College Outdoors trip location?
Any place can be spectacular so it really depends on the season. Mt. Hood is gorgeous with the snow coming down. Tidepools are spectacular. Old growth forests are awe inspiring.
What are you most proud of?
We got a lot of students in their first experiences. They flourished outdoors. Our program opened them up to new horizons. I’m also proud of our student leaders. We introduced a lot of people to the wonders of Oregon.
What’s next for you?
I’m moving to Central Oregon. My main hobby now is figuring out Medicare, insurance payments, and deductibles!
