Books for Juneteenth
- Juneteenth display at Watzek Library.
June 19th, also known as Freedom Day or Jubilee Day, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It marks the anniversary of the arrival of Union soldiers in Galveston, Texas in 1865 with the news that the American Civil War had ended and slaves were emancipated. Juneteenth has been celebrated ever since, and became recognized as a federal holiday in 2021. This selection of books, on display in the library atrium, encourages readers to reflect on the enduring impact of slavery as well as the resiliency and achievements of Black Americans. All titles are available for borrowing, and may also be viewed online (https://library.lclark.edu/displays/juneteenth).
