Exhibit: But we’ll have our rights

Watzek Library is proud to host the exhibit But we’ll have our rights: Black Suffragists and Their Push for the Vote from February 1 through April 15, 2020.

Unknown to many, Black women combated racism and sexism to expand the right to vote to women. This small exhibit introduces a few of the Black suffragists who worked hard leading to the enactment of the 19th Amendment in 1920, and Oregon’s passage of voting rights for women in 1912.

The exhibit is the result of a collaboration between the Ombuds Office, Watzek Library, and CAS students Andrea Lewis ’21 and Tyler Short ’21, and includes Alison Saar’s cast bronze sculpture depicting abolitionist and suffragist Harriet Tubman, Swing Low. The exhibit will run from February 1 through April 15, 2020.
