NSF Supports Pacific Northwest Geometry Seminars
Associate Professor of Mathematics Paul Allen and his collaborators have been awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation’s Conferences and Workshops program to host three annual meetings of the Pacific Northwest Geometry Seminar, beginning in 2019.

Associate Professor of Mathematics Paul Allen and his collaborators have been awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation’s Conferences and Workshops program to host three annual meetings of the Pacific Northwest Geometry Seminar, beginning in 2019. Dr. Allen is one of the conference organizers, and participating institutions include the University of British Columbia, University of Washington, University of Oregon, Oregon State University, Portland State University, and Lewis & Clark College. NSF support will offset travel expenses for speakers and participants, as well as the costs of hosting the meetings. These impactful and important conferences bring together researchers and students from around the region for consultation and the stimulation of new ideas. Some iteration of this annual conference was first hosted in 1974; previous such regional meetings have initiated new research collaborations and strengthened individual research programs throughout the Pacific Northwest.
Dr. Allen’s research addresses geometric questions by studying an associated partial differential equation, and the application of differential equations in related fields. In addition to serving as the Rogers Summer Science Research Program director, Dr. Allen has supervised more than ten Lewis & Clark undergraduates in summer research experiences and mentored nine students currently in STEM graduate programs.
