Lewis & Clark to Host Alumni Awards

Each year, the Lewis & Clark Board of Alumni honors members of the College of Arts and Sciences community for their outstanding accomplishments and service. We’re proud to announce the 2018 honorees, who will receive their awards at the Alumni Honors Banquet on March 9.

Pioneer Alumni Leadership Award (for service to L&C alumni)

Edgard Garcia BA ’92

Edgard Garcia’s involvement with Lewis & Clark alumni runs deep. Over the years, he has volunteered for Black and Orange Parties, Alumni Weekends, class reunions, and Homecoming; served as a member of the Alumni of Color Advisory Group; and much more. He’s also been a member of three L&C Alumni Hood to Coast Relay teams as a driver and a runner. In fall 2018, Garcia joined the Board of Alumni.

Donald G. Balmer Citation (for voluntary service to the college)

Joann Geddes

As a faculty member in the Institute for the Study of American Language and Culture (ISALC), now known as Academic English Studies (AES), Joann Geddes profoundly impacted many lives. Although she retired in 2016, she has remained actively engaged with the college, serving on the L&C Dallaire Scholarship Committee and the Fulbright Scholarship Screening Committee. She is also an advisor to the students organizing the Middle East Studies Symposium.

Outstanding Young Alumnus Award

Jeff Cruttenden BA ’12

Jeff Cruttenden is the cofounder of SAY, a technology platform for open communication between companies and their owners. SAY is transforming stock ownership by connecting shareholders to each other and empowering them to access their full ownership rights. The idea was born at Cruttenden’s first company, Acorns, which he cofounded with his father to radically simplify and democratize investing.

Distinguished Alumna Award

Ruthe Farmer BA ’92

Ruthe Farmer is a U.S.-based activist and advocate for diversity in technology. Currently chief evangelist at CSforAll, Farmer previously served as senior policy advisor for tech inclusion at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and led strategy and K-12 programs at the National Center for Women & Information Technology. She holds an MBA in social entrepreneurship from the University of Oxford.
