Professor Kathy Hessler Offers Her Wisdom To The LC SALDF Chapter

Professor Kathy Hessler Offers Her Wisdom To The LC SALDF Chapter

Our last event of the semester (and academic year) was a curriculum advising event on Thursday, April 12th with our own wonderful chapter advisor, Professor Kathy Hessler!

Each year this event soothes the anxious minds of soon-to-be-registering students not only about how registration works, but how to pick classes, what animal law offerings are coming in the future, and how to navigate summers in law school (whether you are employed or not).

Professor Hessler spoke of the importance of planning, while recognizing that things change and so patience and flexibility are key in all things, but especially law school curriculum and life planning.  She then dived into the types of classes students should be considering, such as Bar classes, graduation requirements like Constitutional Law II and Ethics, as well as the categories of classes designated by the law school: Foundational, Highly Specialized, and Experiential.  Also factoring into students’ consideration should be extracurricular opportunities such as participating on the law review, in moot court and other competitions, as well as clinic course offerings, externships, and legal practicums.

Looking to the animal law course offerings, Professor Hessler announced the exciting new and expanded curriculum for the 2018 - 2019 year including (but not limited to): Animal Law Jurisprudence with Steve Wise, Comparative International Animal Law with Dr. Raj Reddy, Companion Animal Law with Dean Pamela Frasch, and an Animal in Agriculture Seminar with Joyce Tischler, founder of the Animal Legal Defense Fund.

These classes are evidence of the expanding and rapidly growing field of animal law and our LC SALDF chapter members are so thankful for the opportunity to be students at a school with such a fantastic animal law program.  Our thanks to Professor Hessler for all she does and continues to do for our chapter (and beyond) - we are so thankful to have her in our corner!
