Alumnus named Lake Oswego School District equity director

David Salerno Owens, School Counseling ’16, has recently been named the director of equity and strategic initiatives by the Lake Oswego School District.

David Salerno Owens, School Counseling ’16, has recently been named the director of equity and strategic initiatives by the Lake Oswego School District. Salerno Owens previously acted as the Response to Intervention Coordinator and Freshman Transition Specialist at Lakeridge High School. Before joining the Lake Oswego School District, Salerno Owens was a GEAR UP Academic Advocate for Portland Public Schools for nearly three years. The GEAR UP program ensures that Oregon’s low-income middle school and high school students are prepared for, pursue, and succeed in postsecondary education. He also worked with the Fair Housing Council of Oregon to provide education and outreach for mortgage lending to expose unfair and discriminatory practices.

In his new position, Salerno Owens will be involved in the development of proactive equity initiatives and work with staff, students, and the community to implement these initiatives to create an inclusive environment district-wide. He will also assess district curriculum for cultural biases.
