New course for Fall 2018!
12:40-01:40pm, MWF
Prof. Hristova - hristova@lclark.edu
In this course, we will examine how organized religion, various spiritual teachings, and the search for spiritual enlightenment have influenced and shaped art in Russia and China since 2000. Case studies are taken from film, literature and the visual arts and will be supplemented by readings on history and politics. In addition to close analysis of original sources, we will also discuss the cultural and historical contexts surrounding the development of contemporary attitudes towards religion and spirituality in Russia and China, respectively. Finally, we will examine how religious concerns and artistic efforts are impacted by and, in turn, shape internal affairs and policy-making in a continuous process of establishing and challenging state authority.
We will watch Russian and Chinese films, read short literary works and critical articles, and discuss history, politics and visual art.
In English, no prerequisites.
Counts towards: IS, Core substitute (for certain students), the World Languages Major (with Russian), the Russian Minor, or Asian Studies (elective)
