Faculty and Students Explore “Hot Topics” in Sustainability

Lewis & Clark, which Sierra Club named a Top Five “Cool School” in 2017, is committed to developing and maintaining a sustainable campus, and recognizes the importance of scholarship in ecology, economy, and equity, both on campus and in the global community. The Hot Topics Sustainability Series provides an opportunity for students, faculty, and the surrounding community to engage with many of these complex topics. The weekly talks are not lectures, but rather conversations and workshops meant to inform and inspire.
“Lewis & Clark is filled with pockets of vibrant engagement around matters of sustainability on all three campuses and in the larger Portland community,” said Katharina Altpeter-Jones, associate professor of German language and literature at the undergraduate school and member of the Sustainability Council, who helped develop the series. “[We wanted to] see what synergy we can create by bringing together students, staff, faculty, and other scholars and advocates invested in questions of sustainability.”
The two remaining events for the series are:
-
Building Power for Environmental and Climate Justice Through Frontline Leadership, March 15, 5 p.m.—a conversation panel comprised of representatives from OPAL Environmental Justice Oregon and Oregon Just Transition Alliance.
-
Fossil Fuel Divestment and Social Responsible Investing and Finance, March 20, 5 p.m.— led by Amy Bushaw, professor of law at the Lewis & Clark Law School, and Jonas Kron from Trillium Asset management.
All events are free and open to the public, and refreshments will be provided. For more information, click here.
