Student Animal Legal Defense Fund (SALDF)

LC SALDF Volunteers at Green Acres Farm Sanctuary!

March 03, 2018

On Saturday, March 3, the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund chapter at Lewis and Clark Law School held its Spring Work Retreat at Green Acres Farm Sanctuary in Silverton, Oregon.

In addition to mucking stalls and hauling compost, members of LC SALDF had the opportunity to hang out with goats and meet Cupcake. Cupcake is Green Acres’ newest arrival and the sanctuary’s first pig. After being raised as a 4H project, Cupcake was headed to slaughter after being sold at the local fair. Instead, he was given a new lease on life when his former family changed their minds and bought him back from a livestock auction. Cupcake is only one of the dozens of farm animals with unique stories living at the sanctuary.

The work retreat allowed students to bond with one another and members of the community engaged in a similar type of activism, while learning more about the day-to-day details that come with rescuing animals from the farming industry, which motivated members to work harder and remember why they are engaging in an animal law education in the first place.  Given that instructional learning in a classroom, while valuable, can only demonstrate so much, the work retreat was an important reminder to LC SALDF members as to why they are working towards institutional changes via the legal system and was a great success in that, in addition to helping a valued, but needy organization in our local community.

LC SALDF thanks Green Acres Farm Sanctuary for the opportunity to visit with these amazing animals and learn their stories!  LC SALDF also thanks the Animal Legal Defense Fund for their generous support of this work retreat through a SALDF Project Grant, which enticed individuals to attend and allowed members to eat a pre-packaged lunch after a hard day’s work!
