Award Winners 2017

Lewis & Clark students and alumni receive prestigious awards and scholarships.

This spring, Lewis & Clark students and alumni have won a bevy of awards from prestigious organizations. So far, these include the Fulbright Program, the National Science Foundation, and the Davies-Jackson Scholarship, which grants exceptional students—who are among the first in their families to go to college—the opportunity to study at the world-renowned St. John’s College at the University of Cambridge.

For the fifth year in a row, Lewis & Clark College has been named one of the top producers of Fulbright Award winners in the country, according to the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Over the last decade, Lewis & Clark students and alumni have earned more Fulbright U.S. honors than those of any other college or university in Oregon.

These accolades attest to the inspiring energy and intellect of our students, outstanding teaching and mentoring by our faculty, and the many ways our alumni advance knowledge. Below are a few of the award winners’ reflections.

Julia Huggins BA ’13—NSF Fellowship

Major: Biology

“In addition to environmentalism, I’m passionate about teaching and mentoring non-traditional students, which is something I plan to do in graduate school and throughout my career. I credit a lot of my current vision and passion to my experience at Lewis & Clark. My mentors taught me to think critically and fully engage with the scientific process as an undergraduate, which has been an incredible advantage. I am so thankful for the liberal arts experience and the opportunities I had to study philosophy, art, and social sciences in addition to my biology degree.”

Olivia Foster BA ’13—NSF Fellowship

Major: Biology

“Lewis & Clark’s emphasis on thinking critically, as well as the one-on-one mentorship that I got from my many amazing professors, propelled me into graduate school. I would particularly like to give a shout out to my senior thesis advisor Greg Hermann for challenging me to never give up and for reminding me that science is fun.”

Rose Ngo BA ’17—Davies-Jackson Scholarship

Major: Psychology

“I was fortunate [at Lewis & Clark] to have an amazing group of people, outside my friends, who continuously challenged, guided, and inspired me. My professors, supervisor, and coworkers showed me unconditional positive regard, and they should be recognized for their dedication and hard work. Without them, I wouldn’t have gotten this scholarship.”

Jessie Kennedy BA ’15—Fulbright Teaching Assistant in Germany

Major/minor: German studies major; political economy minor

“My time at Lewis & Clark has taught me how tightly intertwined we are on this planet and that it’s necessary for all of us to share responsibility in fighting for justice on a global scale. I’ve learned how integral international politics have been in determining the course of history and setting a path for the future.”

Kristina Dill BA ’16—Fulbright Research Award

Major/minor: Chemistry major; mathematics minor

“Lewis & Clark’s diverse and vibrant community afforded me the opportunity to form friendships with students from around the world, while also learning more about the cultures of their home countries. I especially enjoyed meeting international students through my volunteer work with the Academic English Studies program. While at Lewis & Clark, I came to realize the importance of traveling, learning other languages, and living abroad. I’m very much looking forward to studying in Austria!”

Katie Kowal BA ’17—Rena Ratte Award

Majors: Physics/Political Science

“At L&C I learned a variety of critical thinking skills that gave me the ability to question who I am as a person, and what my place is in the world. This process made me committed to pursue a career that helps other people. No matter what job I find myself in, I want to empower others to think for themselves.”
