Senior RHMS major, Erin Keoppen, was a co-recipient of the 2017 Dorothy Berkson Annual Writing Award in Gender Studies for her essay, “Wild Words: Space, Place, and Gender in Tamil Feminist Poetry and Prose.”

In his nomination letter in support of Keoppen’s submission for the award, Assistant Professor of Rhetoric and Media Studies, Kundai Chirindo, wrote, “Erin’s essay reminds us of the complex imbrication of gender, identity, and spatiality, which in turn, highlights the potential of gender-focused critique within academe and beyond. This essay clarifies poignancy of the voices of these Tamil writers, enacting an ethic of ‘speak with’ and ‘to’ rather than ‘speaking of’ and ‘about’ these ‘dangerous’ women. In it, Erin shows us the way that comparative and/or intercultural work should proceed.”
