LC Community invited to Celebrations of Life for Riley Zickel and Emma Hamel

You are invited to attend upcoming gatherings for two of our beloved students who touched many lives in their time at Lewis & Clark.

You are invited to attend upcoming gatherings for two of our beloved students who touched many lives in their time at Lewis & Clark.

On September 27 at 3:30 p.m. in Smith Hall, there will be a celebration of life for Riley Zickel. A senior chemistry major and music minor, Riley went for a hike in the Mt. Jefferson wilderness in late July. He didn’t return from the hike, and an extensive search yielded no clues to his whereabouts or what had happened.

A group of Riley’s professors, staff, and friends has planned this gathering to celebrate his life among us. There will be chamber music and jazz, along with refreshments. Everyone is welcome. Anyone who knew Riley is invited to share stories about him, either by telling the story at the gathering or by writing a note in a nature memory book. All are encouraged to bring a leaf or small evergreen branch to share in the memory book.

On October 2 at 2 p.m. in Agnes Flanagan Chapel, there will be a celebration of life for Emma Hamel. Emma had finished her sophomore year and was a German studies major planning to participate in the Munich overseas program. This past May, she was in Ohio for her brother’s high school graduation when she was killed in a car crash. Emma’s mother, brother, and an aunt also died in the same crash.

Friends, staff from the Overseas and Off-Campus Programs office where Emma had worked, and some of her professors have planned this celebration of life. There will be music, a multimedia presentation of photographs, and a time of sharing personal memories and tributes. Everyone is welcome to attend, and some of Emma’s extended family who live in the area plan to join us as well. A reception with refreshments will follow immediately afterward in the Gregg Pavilion.

For more information on these two gatherings, please contact Dean of Students Anna Gonzalez (annag@lclark.edu) or Dean of Religious and Spiritual Life Mark Duntley (duntley@lclark.edu).
