Math Scholarship Recipient

Emily O’Sullivan has been chosen for the Christine Fredricks Smith Memorial Scholarship.

Emily O’Sullivan ’17, from San Diego, CA, was recently awarded the Christine Fredricks Smith Memorial Scholarship, the College’s most prestigious award exclusively for mathematics majors.  This Scholarship was established through a gift from Professor Emeritus Greg Fredricks in memory of his daughter, who graduated from the College in 1992 and was killed in an airplane crash in 2007.

This need-based Scholarship is awarded annually to a mathematics major with Junior or Senior standing and a cumulative GPA of at least 3.500. The faculty of the Department of Mathematical Sciences select the recipient based on the candidates’ academic abilities and contributions to the life of the Department.

Emily was very appreciative and had this to say:
“I’m so honored to have been chosen for this scholarship, and so grateful to be part of this community. Many thanks to Professor Fredricks for his support and generosity, and to my professors for their encouragement, kindness, and endless patience! The math department at Lewis & Clark is the most wonderful place and I have felt nothing but support and encouragement while here from students and faculty alike. I really appreciate my time here and am grateful to have this scholarship to continue learning mathematics here.”
