Chin 230 - Introduction to Chinese Literature in Translation

Chinese Martial Arts in Fiction and Film

The popularity of Chinese martial arts as a genre in fiction and film has launched Chinese culture and literature onto the international stage.  Chinese martial arts not only represents China’s cultural past, but also helps define the Chinese position in a multicultural and multinational age.  In this course we will examine the pre-modern roots of the tradition of China’s martial arts as well as their expressions in various modern forms such as fiction and film.  We will combine the formal analysis of literature and film with study of the social and historical context of cultural production.
