Dedication of Holmes Hall happens Saturday, Oct. 27

With the addition of Holmes Hall, 70 percent of all undergraduate students now live on campus. The building’s dedication—scheduled during Homecoming Weekend—features President Glassner’s remarks, refreshments, and student-led tours.

This fall, Lewis & Clark welcomed the first residents of Edna Holmes Hall, a new five-story residential living community located at the southern end of campus, near East Hall. Nearly 170 students—mostly juniors and seniors, with some sophomores—moved in during late August. With the addition of Holmes Hall, 70 percent of all undergraduate students now live on campus.

Faculty and staff are invited to register to attend the dedication of Holmes Hall on Saturday, October 27. Because the event is happening during Homecoming Weekend, the celebration brings together alumni, students, family, and friends of Lewis & Clark for refreshments and the following program:

  • Student-led tours at 11 a.m.
  • President Glassner’s remarks at 11:30 a.m.
  • Last tour departs at 12:30 p.m.

Designed with upper-division students in mind, Holmes Hall features large rooms and a high percentage of singles, as well as a game room, community kitchen, and spacious lounge complete with family-style dining tables looking out on a paved courtyard with a wood-burning fireplace.

Built in keeping with the college’s commitment to responsible stewardship of resources and sustainable practices, Holmes Hall is on track to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold standards.

The green building features a bicycle storage room on the first floor, a storm-water management system, and energy reduction technology.

The building is designed to use 40 percent less water and 26 percent less energy than a typical residential building. In addition, the building’s design makes impressive use of milled and repurposed trees from the site. Up to 75 percent of the original site’s maple and fir trees were used to create furniture, stair treads, wall paneling, and trim.
