Matt Johnston Receives Research Fellowship

Matt Johnston has received a six-week fellowship to work on his project, “Precolumbian Civilization as Cultural Patrimony in U.S. and Mexican Archaeology.”

Matt Johnston, Assistant Professor of Art History, recently received a Robert L. Platzman Memorial Fellowship from the University of Chicago Library. This program supports short-term research fellowships in the Special Collections Research Center, and Dr. Johnston will use this six-week fellowship to work on his project, “Precolumbian Civilization as Cultural Patrimony in U.S. and Mexican Archaeology.” This project will explore how U.S. and Mexican archaeologists in the late nineteenth century wrote about and represented pre-Columbian art in order to claim pre-Columbian civilizations as part of their national heritage.
