Alumna Lisa Gaylord speaks about sustainable development

Distinguished Alumna Lisa Gaylord ’76, spoke to the Lewis & Clark community on Monday about her involvement with conservation and sustainability. Gaylord is the director for community relations and sustainable development for Rio Tinto/Qit Madagascar Minerals, having recently moved from her former position as director of strategic planning for the Wildlife Conservation Society in Washington D.C. She has been involved with biodiversity conservation and environmental programs since 1987.

Gaylord spoke about her “holistic thinking” approach of using integrated programming as a tool for sustainable development through nature, health, wealth, and power. She then answered questions from Lewis & Clark students which ranged from advice about how to actively promote conservation in a community where funds are diminishing, to her personal opinion about the accuracy of the animated film Madagascar.

Gaylord was briefly visiting Portland to be honored at the Alumni Honors Banquet before moving to Madagascar for her new job.
