The No. 9-ranked Lewis & Clark women’s basketball team battled to the final buzzer, but fell 52-50 to conference rival George Fox in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament Saturday night.
Lewis & Clark finishes the season with a 25-4 overall record, with all four losses coming to the No. 3-ranked Bruins.
The Pioneers, coming off their first-ever NCAA tournament win on Friday night, celebrated a milestone in the closing minutes Saturday when senior Megan Spence hit a clutch three-pointer to reach the 1,000-point mark for her collegiate career.
Senior Neva Hauser led the way against George Fox with 12 points and 10 rebounds, with Spence scoring a team-high 15 points. Senior Margaret Dowling and junior Kristina Williams each scored six points.
In addition to their national Top Ten ranking and farthest-ever advance in the NCAA tournament, the Pioneers placed three players on the all-conference team. Williams and Sara Villanueva were named to the first and second teams, respectively, and Hauser received honorable mention.
For the 2012-13 season, the Pioneers are again off to a strong start, receiving the highest national ranking in program history.
